What is ESX?

VMware ESX is a bare-metal hypervisor developed by VMware Inc. that enables server virtualization by abstracting hardware resources to run multiple virtual machines on a single physical server. In the Indian IT landscape, ESX is widely deployed in data centers and cloud infrastructures by enterprises, service providers, and government agencies to optimize hardware utilization, reduce operational costs, and improve disaster recovery. Originally introduced as a Type-1 hypervisor, ESX included a management console called the Service Console based on a modified Linux kernel. However, it has largely been superseded by ESXi, a lighter version without the console. ESX is commonly encountered in legacy environments and is still relevant for certification exams such as VMware Certified Professional (VCP). Indian IT professionals studying virtualization must understand ESX architecture, including its resource management, networking, and storage capabilities, as many organizations continue to maintain ESX-based systems alongside modern ESXi deployments.
