Electronic Serial Number
Full Form of ESN
What is ESN?
An Electronic Serial Number (ESN) is a unique 32-bit identifier assigned to mobile devices, primarily used in CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) networks to authenticate and track handsets. In India, ESN was crucial during the early 2000s when CDMA networks from operators like Reliance and Tata Indicom were popular. The number is embedded in the device hardware and is transmitted to the network during registration, enabling carriers to manage services, prevent fraud, and block stolen phones. While GSM devices use the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number, ESN serves an analogous role for CDMA devices. Though 3G and 4G technologies have largely shifted to other identifiers like MEID, ESN remains relevant for legacy equipment and certain rural networks. Understanding ESN is important for telecom professionals preparing for exams like GATE (Electronics) or BSNL recruitment, as it reflects fundamental device identification concepts in cellular systems.
