What is ERO?
An Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) is a government official appointed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to oversee the preparation and revision of electoral rolls for a specific constituency. The ERO ensures that the voter list is accurate, up-to-date, and includes all eligible citizens. Typically, a Sub-Divisional Magistrate or a similar revenue officer serves as the ERO. Their duties include adding new voters, deleting deceased or shifted voters, correcting entries, and addressing claims and objections during summary revisions or special campaigns. The ERO works closely with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and reports to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state. The role is critical for maintaining the integrity of the democratic process, as errors in the electoral roll can disenfranchise voters. In India, the ERO is especially active before general elections, state elections, and by-elections.
