Environmental Quality Management
Full Form of EQM
What is EQM?
Environmental Quality Management (EQM) refers to the systematic process of monitoring, assessing, and controlling environmental parameters such as air, water, soil, and noise levels to ensure they meet prescribed standards. In India, EQM is crucial for regulatory compliance under acts like the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, and the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and state pollution control boards implement EQM frameworks to track pollution indices, enforce emission limits, and promote sustainable industrial practices. EQM is employed across sectors including manufacturing, mining, urban planning, and agriculture, often integrated with Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) for new projects. It is also a key component of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) and initiatives to improve river health under the Namami Gange project. For students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, GATE, and State PCS, understanding EQM concepts is essential for environment and ecology sections. Effective EQM not only safeguards public health but also supports India's commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly climate action and life below water.
