European Qualifications Framework
Full Form of EQF
What is EQF?
The European Qualifications Framework (EQF) is a translation tool that helps compare national qualifications systems across European countries. It was established in 2008 by the European Union to promote lifelong learning and worker mobility by creating a common reference framework based on learning outcomes. In India, the EQF is primarily referenced by university international offices, accreditation bodies such as the National Board of Accreditation, and educational policy makers when evaluating foreign degrees for equivalence with Indian qualifications. It is used during credit transfer discussions, student exchange programmes, and recognition of prior learning. Although India has its own National Qualifications Framework (NQF), the EQF serves as a benchmark for aligning Indian qualifications with global standards. For students aspiring to study or work in Europe, understanding EQF levels helps in mapping their Indian degrees to corresponding European levels. The framework covers eight levels, from basic (Level 1) to doctoral (Level 8), based on knowledge, skills, and responsibility. In competitive exams like UGC-NET or abroad counselling sessions, questions on international qualification frameworks like EQF may appear under comparative education topics.
