Extended Matching Question
Full Form of EMQ
What is EMQ?
Extended Matching Questions (EMQs) are a structured assessment format widely used in medical education to test clinical reasoning and applied knowledge rather than rote memorisation. Unlike traditional multiple-choice questions, EMQs present a clinical scenario, vignette, or theme followed by a list of options from which candidates must select the most appropriate answer. In India, EMQs are commonly used in postgraduate medical entrance examinations such as NEET-PG, AIIMS, and PGI entrance tests, as well as in various medical college internal assessments and university theory examinations. The format was originally developed by the Royal College of Physicians in the UK but has been adopted extensively in Indian medical curricula due to its ability to evaluate higher-order thinking and diagnostic skills. Medical aspirants preparing for competitive exams frequently practice EMQs through question banks and coaching modules to familiarise themselves with clinical case-based questions that mirror real-world patient scenarios encountered in hospital settings. This makes EMQ preparation a key part of every MBBS student's study plan when targeting PG entrance examinations.
