Employee Gratuity Number
Full Form of EGN
What is EGN?
The Employee Gratuity Number (EGN) is a unique identifier assigned to an employee by an employer for tracking and calculating gratuity entitlements under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972 in India. Gratuity is a lump-sum payment made by an employer to an employee as a token of appreciation for continuous service of five years or more. The EGN helps organizations maintain accurate records of each employee's gratuity fund contributions, eligibility, and final settlement. It is primarily used by HR and payroll departments in private and public sector companies, as well as by banks and insurance firms that manage gratuity trusts. While not a mandatory government-issued number like the UAN for provident fund, the EGN is a common internal reference code that simplifies administration when employees change jobs or retire. For students preparing for competitive exams such as those for banking, SSC, or management roles, knowledge of gratuity-related terms like EGN is useful for understanding employee benefits and labour law provisions. The EGN often appears in company HR policies, salary slips, and gratuity claim forms during exit formalities.
