Electronic Flight Bag
Full Form of EFB
What is EFB?
An Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) is a digital device—typically a tablet or laptop—used by pilots to replace traditional paper-based flight documents such as charts, manuals, navigation logs, and performance data. In India, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has approved the use of EFBs to enhance flight safety and operational efficiency. Airlines like Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet equip their cockpit crews with EFBs, which are used during pre-flight planning, taxi, takeoff, cruise, approach, and landing phases. These devices can display real-time weather updates, calculate fuel requirements, and provide electronic checklists. EFBs come in three classes: Class 1 (portable, non-mount), Class 2 (portable but mountable), and Class 3 (installed avionics). For students pursuing aviation or pilot training in India, understanding EFB operations is a key part of Instrument Rating and Airline Transport Pilot License exams. The shift from paper to digital has improved accuracy, reduced weight, and allowed faster access to critical information, making EFBs an essential tool in modern aviation.
