English as an Additional Language
Full Form of EAL
What is EAL?
English as an Additional Language (EAL) is an educational term used to describe the learning and teaching of English for students whose first language is not English. In India, with its immense linguistic diversity, EAL has become a crucial component of the school curriculum, especially in urban and semi-urban areas where English is the medium of instruction in many private and government-aided schools. The term is used to differentiate it from ESL (English as a Second Language), acknowledging that for many Indian children, English may be the third or fourth language they acquire. EAL programmes typically focus on developing proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in English while preserving the student’s native language skills. These programmes are often integrated into mainstream classrooms and may include pull-out sessions or dedicated language support. EAL is relevant for competitive exams like CTET and TET where understanding language acquisition theories is tested. It is also used in teacher training and curriculum design. The approach emphasises inclusive education and helps students transition smoothly into English-medium academic environments without losing their cultural and linguistic identity.
