Deputy Under Officer

What is DUO?

Deputy Under Officer (DUO) is a senior cadet rank in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) of India, positioned just below the rank of Under Officer. It is awarded to cadets who demonstrate exceptional leadership, discipline, and commitment during their training. DUOs assist senior officers in managing platoons, conducting drills, and ensuring smooth execution of NCC activities such as camps, parades, and social service projects. This rank is commonly found in all three wings of NCC – Army, Navy, and Air Force – and is a stepping stone for cadets aspiring to become Under Officers or pursue a career in the Indian Armed Forces. The selection process involves evaluation of performance in annual training camps, written tests, and interviews conducted by commanding officers. DUOs play a vital role in mentoring junior cadets and maintaining unit cohesion. While not directly tested in competitive exams like UPSC or CDS, the rank holders gain invaluable leadership experience that is highly regarded in defence service interviews and SSB assessments. The rank is primarily used in school and college NCC units across India, especially during Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations.
