Digital Terrain Model
Full Form of DTM
What is DTM?
A Digital Terrain Model (DTM) is a three-dimensional representation of the Earth's bare surface, excluding vegetation, buildings, and other features. It captures elevation data at regular intervals using technologies like LiDAR, photogrammetry, or satellite imagery. In India, DTMs are critical for infrastructure planning, flood risk assessment, agricultural land management, and environmental monitoring. Organizations such as the Survey of India, ISRO, and state irrigation departments rely on DTMs for projects like highway alignment, dam construction, and urban development. They are also used in disaster management to model landslide and flood-prone zones. DTM data is often referenced in civil engineering, geography, and remote sensing curricula, and questions on its application appear in competitive exams like GATE (Civil Engineering), UPSC Geography optional, and state engineering services exams. By providing precise elevation information, DTMs enable accurate contour mapping, earthwork calculations, and watershed analysis, making them indispensable for both government and private sector projects across India.
