District Resource Unit
Full Form of DRU
What is DRU?
A District Resource Unit (DRU) is a key institution under India’s Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (formerly Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan) that functions at the district level to support the professional development of teachers and strengthen the quality of school education. Each DRU is typically housed within the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) and acts as a local hub for designing and delivering in-service training programmes, preparing teaching-learning materials, and conducting action research on classroom practices. The unit works closely with block and cluster resource centres to ensure that training reaches every government school teacher in the district. DRUs also coordinate with the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) to align training content with state-level academic standards. Their role is particularly important in implementing new curriculum frameworks and pedagogical reforms. For competitive exams like CTET, UPTET, or state teacher eligibility tests, candidates should be aware that DRUs are part of the decentralised teacher training infrastructure in India. They are used most intensively during academic sessions and before the rollout of new textbooks. In short, the DRU is a grassroots mechanism that translates national education policies into actionable classroom improvements.
