Digital Public Goods
Full Form of DPG
What is DPG?
Digital Public Goods (DPGs) refer to open-source software, data, standards, and content that are freely available and designed to promote public benefit through digital infrastructure. In the Indian context, the government has championed DPGs as a foundational layer for inclusive digital transformation under initiatives like Digital India. Prominent examples include Aadhaar—the biometric identity system, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for real-time payments, and DigiLocker for digital document storage. These DPGs are built on open standards and enable low-cost, scalable solutions across sectors such as finance, healthcare, education, and governance. India actively promotes the adoption of DPGs globally through platforms like the India Stack and the ‘DPG’ recognition framework by the UN. For students and professionals, understanding DPGs is essential for exams on digital economy, information technology policy, and public administration. They represent a shift from proprietary models to collaborative, community-driven digital ecosystems that prioritise equity and innovation.
