Digital Object Identifier
Full Form of DOI
What is DOI?
A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a unique alphanumeric string assigned to digital objects such as journal articles, research reports, datasets, and official publications. It provides a permanent link to the object’s location on the internet, ensuring reliable access even if the web address changes. In India, DOIs are widely used in academic and scientific publishing, especially by universities, research institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR). They are assigned by agencies such as Crossref and DataCite and are essential for citing sources in scholarly work. The DOI system supports the country’s growing emphasis on research output, helping Indian researchers gain global visibility and comply with mandates from bodies like the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). For competitive exams like UGC NET or GATE, understanding DOIs is important as they appear in questions on research methodology and information retrieval. A DOI typically begins with '10.' followed by a prefix and suffix, and is linked to a metadata record that describes the object. Overall, the DOI enhances the integrity and traceability of India’s digital research ecosystem.
