Demilitarized Zone
Full Form of DMZ
What is DMZ?
A Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is a perimeter network that acts as a buffer between an organization’s internal local area network (LAN) and untrusted external networks, typically the internet. In a DMZ, publicly accessible services such as web servers, email servers, and DNS servers are placed, ensuring that any external attack cannot directly reach the internal network. In the Indian context, DMZs are widely adopted by enterprises, government agencies, and financial institutions to safeguard sensitive data while maintaining public-facing services. The term originates from military geography but has become a standard concept in network security architecture. IT professionals in India use DMZs to comply with data protection regulations like the Information Technology Act and ISO 27001. In cybersecurity exams such as CEH or CCNA, understanding DMZ configurations is crucial. The DMZ is typically protected by two firewalls: one between the internet and the DMZ, and another between the DMZ and the internal network. This layered approach minimizes the risk of a complete breach, making DMZ a foundational element in Indian cybersecurity practices.
