Digital India Hackathon
Full Form of DIH
What is DIH?
The Digital India Hackathon (DIH) is a flagship initiative by the Government of India, organized under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in collaboration with MyGov and other partners. It is a nationwide coding competition aimed at fostering innovation and problem-solving among students, startups, and professionals by inviting them to develop digital solutions for real-world challenges faced by government departments and public sector units. DIH typically runs as a 36-hour non-stop online event where teams build prototypes based on problem statements provided by various ministries, such as health, education, agriculture, and urban development. The hackathon is part of the larger Digital India programme launched in 2015 to transform India into a digitally empowered society. DIH is conducted annually and has become a key platform for identifying and nurturing tech talent across the country. Participants gain exposure to policy-level issues, mentoring from industry experts, and opportunities to have their solutions deployed in actual government systems. For exam aspirants, familiarity with DIH is relevant for competitive exams like UPSC, where questions on digital governance, e-governance initiatives, and innovation schemes appear in the General Studies paper. DIH embodies the government's 'Innovate in India' vision and serves as a practical bridge between academia and public administration.
