Dedicated Freight Corridor
Full Form of DFC
What is DFC?
The Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) is a flagship infrastructure project of the Indian Railways, aimed at creating exclusive high-capacity railway lines for freight movement. Spanning approximately 3,300 km across the Eastern and Western corridors, the DFC separates freight traffic from passenger trains, dramatically reducing congestion and transit times. The Eastern Corridor connects Ludhiana in Punjab to Dankuni in West Bengal, while the Western Corridor links Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Maharashtra. These corridors enable faster, more reliable logistics for coal, containers, cement, and other bulk goods, bolstering India's manufacturing and export sectors. The project is implemented by the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), a special purpose vehicle under the Ministry of Railways. When fully operational, the DFC is expected to carry over 70% of the railways' freight traffic, cutting logistics costs and supporting the government's 'Make in India' and infrastructure growth agendas. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and RRB, questions on the DFC's routes, length, implementing agency, and economic significance are common, making it a crucial topic for aspirants.
