Debye
Full Form of DEBY
What is DEBY?
The Debye, symbolized as D, is a CGS (centimeter-gram-second) unit of electric dipole moment used in physics and chemistry to measure the separation of positive and negative charges within a molecule. Named after the Dutch-American Nobel laureate Peter Joseph Wilhelm Debye, who received the 1936 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his contributions to the understanding of molecular structure through his investigations on dipole moments and the diffraction of X-rays by gases, this unit remains a fundamental measurement in spectroscopy and molecular studies. In India, the Debye is widely taught across undergraduate and postgraduate physics and chemistry syllabi in universities and is a regular concept tested in national-level competitive examinations such as JEE, NEET, and the CSIR-NET examination. One Debye is equal to approximately 3.33564 × 10^-30 coulomb-meters. The unit helps Indian students and researchers quantify molecular polarity, which is essential in fields like drug design, materials science, and chemical engineering, and frequently features in question papers analyzing molecular geometry and intermolecular forces.

Example
The dipole moment of a water molecule is approximately 1.85 Debye, which explains its high polarity and excellent solvent properties commonly discussed in JEE and NEET chemistry papers.
