Debt Collection Guidelines
Full Form of DCG
What is DCG?
Debt Collection Guidelines (DCG) are a set of regulatory norms issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to govern the practices of banks, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), and other lending institutions during the recovery of loans. These guidelines aim to protect borrowers from harassment, unfair tactics, and unethical behaviour by recovery agents, ensuring that the debt recovery process is conducted with dignity, transparency, and fairness. Introduced in 2012 and updated periodically, DCG outline specific rules regarding communication frequency, timings (typically 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM), mode of contact (phone, letters, personal visits), and the prohibition of intimidation or use of abusive language. Lenders must also provide clear loan statements, notice periods before repossession, and a grievance redressal mechanism. In India, these guidelines are particularly relevant given the high volume of retail loans, credit cards, and microfinance lending. For students preparing for banking exams (e.g., IBPS, RBI Grade B), knowledge of DCG is essential as questions often test understanding of borrower protection norms and regulatory compliance.
