Developmental Coordination Disorder
Full Form of DCD
What is DCD?
Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by significant impairment in motor coordination skills, which interferes with daily activities and academic performance. It is not due to a general medical condition or intellectual disability. In India, DCD is increasingly recognised in paediatric clinics, special education centres, and occupational therapy settings. The disorder often appears in early childhood, when a child struggles with tasks like tying shoelaces, handwriting, or riding a bicycle. Awareness in India is growing, but many cases remain undiagnosed due to lack of standardised assessment tools and trained professionals. DCD is commonly referred to as dyspraxia in Indian educational contexts. The condition affects approximately 5–6% of school-aged children, with boys more frequently diagnosed. In competitive exams like NEET PG or psychology entrance tests, DCD may appear as a topic in child psychiatry or developmental psychology sections. Early intervention through occupational therapy and adaptive strategies can significantly improve motor skills and self-esteem. Support from schools and parents is crucial for the child's overall development.
