Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana
Full Form of DAY
What is DAY?
Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana (DAY) is a flagship poverty alleviation scheme of the Government of India, launched in 2011 under the Ministry of Rural Development and later extended to urban areas. It encompasses two major sub-missions: DAY-NRLM (National Rural Livelihoods Mission) and DAY-NULM (National Urban Livelihoods Mission). The primary aim of DAY is to reduce poverty by enabling poor households to access gainful self-employment and skilled wage employment opportunities, thereby improving their livelihoods. The scheme focuses on building strong grassroots institutions of the poor, such as Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and providing them with financial and technical support. DAY is implemented across all states and union territories, with a special emphasis on vulnerable groups including Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and women. The acronym is widely used in government reports, development sector discussions, and competitive exams like UPSC and state civil services. For students, understanding DAY is crucial for questions related to social welfare and poverty eradication initiatives in India.
