Customs Zonal Commissioner
Full Form of CZC
What is CZC?
A Customs Zonal Commissioner (CZC) is a senior officer in the Indian Customs and Central Excise department, now under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). Each CZC heads a Customs Zone, which is a large territorial division (e.g., Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi) responsible for the administration of customs laws, including assessment of duties, prevention of smuggling, and enforcement of trade regulations. The CZC supervises multiple Commissionerates within the zone and reports to the Chief Commissioner. This role is crucial for India’s international trade, ensuring smooth clearance of goods at ports and airports while combating illegal trade. The designation is used in official communications, departmental orders, and annual reports. For competitive exams like UPSC Civil Services, knowing about CZC is important for the Indian Economy and Polity sections, as customs administration is a key part of indirect tax collection. The CZC also coordinates with other agencies such as the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the Narcotics Control Bureau.
