Central Trade Union
Full Form of CTU
What is CTU?
A Central Trade Union (CTU) in India is a nationally recognized apex organization of trade unions, as defined under the Trade Unions Act, 1926. To be recognized as a CTU, a union must have a minimum verified membership of 500,000 workers, spread across at least four states or industries. CTUs play a critical role in the Indian labour ecosystem by representing workers at the highest level of dialogue with the government and employers. They participate in tripartite consultations, such as those conducted by the Indian Labour Conference, shape policy on wages, social security, and industrial relations, and coordinate collective bargaining and strikes at a national level. Major CTUs include the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), and Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). The term is widely used in labour law, industrial disputes, and policy documents, and is frequently tested in competitive exams like UPSC and state PCS under labour and social issues. Understanding CTUs is essential for students of law, commerce, and public administration, as they form the backbone of institutionalized worker representation in India.
