Cardiotocography
Full Form of CTG
What is CTG?
Cardiotocography (CTG) is a diagnostic test used during pregnancy to monitor the fetal heart rate and uterine contractions. It provides a continuous graphical recording of these parameters, helping clinicians assess fetal well-being, especially in the third trimester and during labor. In India, CTG is widely employed in both government hospitals and private clinics to detect signs of fetal distress, such as hypoxia or umbilical cord compression. The test is typically performed from 28 weeks of gestation onward, either as a routine check or when complications like reduced fetal movements, hypertension, or diabetes are present. During labor, CTG tracing guides decisions on interventions like cesarean sections, making it a cornerstone of modern obstetrics. For medical students and nursing professionals, understanding CTG interpretation is a key component of the MBBS and nursing curricula. Furthermore, questions on CTG frequently appear in postgraduate medical entrance exams such as NEET PG and AIIMS. The accessibility and affordability of CTG machines have improved maternal care across India, contributing to reduced perinatal mortality rates.
