Coastal Regulation Zone
Full Form of CRZ
What is CRZ?
The Coastal Regulation Zone, commonly known as CRZ, is a framework established by the Government of India to regulate human activity along its vast coastline. Introduced through the CRZ Notification in 1991 under the Environment Protection Act of 1986, it divides the coastal stretches into four zones: CRZ-I (most ecologically sensitive), CRZ-II, CRZ-III, and CRZ-IV, each with specific restrictions on construction, industrial activity, and tourism development. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change oversees its implementation, while Coastal Zone Management Authorities at the state level handle local enforcement. CRZ plays a crucial role in protecting mangroves, coral reefs, turtle nesting sites, and fishing communities from unchecked real estate and industrial growth. It has shaped major infrastructure decisions, including the Mumbai coastal road and the Sethusamudram project. For aspirants preparing for UPSC, SSC, and state PSC examinations, CRZ is a frequently asked topic in environment and geography sections, making it an essential concept in Indian regulatory studies.
