Central Procurement Board
Full Form of CPB
What is CPB?
The Central Procurement Board (CPB) is a statutory body under the Indian Ministry of Defence, established to streamline and expedite the procurement of capital equipment for the armed forces. It was formed following the recommendations of the Dhirendra Singh Committee on defence reforms to reduce delays and enhance transparency in the acquisition process. The CPB is responsible for evaluating, approving, and recommending major capital procurement proposals, typically those exceeding ₹100 crore, for final clearance by the Defence Acquisition Council. It operates within the framework of the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) and works closely with service headquarters, ordnance factories, and public sector undertakings. The board comprises senior defence and financial officials, ensuring multi-disciplinary scrutiny. Its role is critical in modernising India's military capabilities, as effective procurement directly impacts national security. The CPB is commonly referenced in defence policy discussions, parliamentary reports, and news articles on military acquisitions. For competitive exams like UPSC, defence procurement reforms—including the establishment of the CPB—are relevant topics under security and governance. Understanding its function helps aspirants analyse India's defence preparedness and policy evolution.
