Committee of Sponsoring Organizations
Full Form of COSO
What is COSO?
COSO, or the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission, is a joint initiative of five private-sector organizations dedicated to providing thought leadership on enterprise risk management, internal control, and fraud deterrence. Originally established in 1985 to sponsor the National Commission on Fraudulent Financial Reporting, COSO is best known for its Internal Control – Integrated Framework, widely adopted by organizations globally to design, implement, and evaluate internal controls. In India, COSO frameworks are referenced by companies complying with the Companies Act, 2013, which mandates an adequate internal financial control system. Auditors, especially those following Standards on Auditing (SA) issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), often use COSO principles to assess control effectiveness. Additionally, Indian listed companies use COSO for risk management under SEBI regulations and corporate governance codes. The framework is applicable across industries, from banking and IT to manufacturing, helping organizations improve operational efficiency, ensure reliable financial reporting, and comply with laws. Questions on COSO frequently appear in professional exams like CA, CS, CMA, and MBA courses, particularly in audit and risk management papers.
