Cyan, Magenta, Yellow
Full Form of CMY
What is CMY?
CMY stands for Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow — the three primary colors of the subtractive color model used in color printing and graphic design. Unlike RGB (Red, Green, Blue) which is additive and used for screens, CMY works by absorbing (subtracting) light: cyan absorbs red, magenta absorbs green, and yellow absorbs blue. When combined in equal amounts, they theoretically produce black, but in practice, printers add a separate black ink (K) to form the CMYK model. In India, CMY is fundamental in the printing industry, from newspaper presses to high-quality photo labs, and is taught in graphic design, visual arts, and computer science courses. Understanding CMY helps students grasp color theory, which is often tested in competitive exams like NID, NIFT, and UGC NET for design and media. The model is also used in digital imaging software like Adobe Photoshop and CorelDraw, where sliders adjust CMY values for precise color reproduction.
