Capability Maturity Model
Full Form of CMM
What is CMM?
The Capability Maturity Model (CMM) is a framework used to assess and improve an organization's software development processes. Developed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University, it describes five maturity levels: Initial, Repeatable, Defined, Managed, and Optimizing. In India, CMM gained prominence as IT services companies adopted it to demonstrate process maturity and quality to global clients. Major Indian IT firms like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, and Wipro pursued CMM Level 5 certification, the highest level, to gain competitive advantage. The model is applied in software engineering, project management, and quality assurance across government and private sectors. Today, CMM has largely evolved into CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration), but the original model remains a reference for process improvement. For students and professionals preparing for software engineering exams or quality management certifications, understanding CMM is essential as it is frequently asked in questions on process models and software quality.
