Customs, Immigration and Quarantine
Full Form of CIQ
What is CIQ?
CIQ stands for Customs, Immigration and Quarantine, a collective of three government-controlled procedures that every international traveller must pass through upon arrival or departure from India. Customs checks for prohibited or dutiable goods, Immigration verifies travel documents and visas, and Quarantine inspects for infectious diseases or restricted biological material. These procedures are conducted sequentially at designated counters in all international airports, seaports, and land border crossings. In India, the Bureau of Immigration, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (under Customs), and the Ministry of Health’s quarantine officers manage these checks. Travellers are required to fill arrival cards, submit to baggage scanning, and sometimes provide health declarations. CIQ clearance is mandatory for entering or exiting the country. The term is frequently used in aviation and travel industry briefings, by airport authorities, and by tour operators. Students appearing for competitive exams like UPSC or SSC may encounter CIQ in questions related to India’s border management and airport infrastructure. Understanding CIQ helps travellers prepare documentation and avoid delays.
