Central Industrial Judiciary
Full Form of CIJ
What is CIJ?
The Central Industrial Judiciary (CIJ) refers to the system of courts and tribunals established under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, in India to adjudicate disputes between employers and employees, particularly in industrial establishments. It comprises Labour Courts, Industrial Tribunals, and National Industrial Tribunals, each with specific jurisdictions based on the nature and monetary value of the dispute. The CIJ plays a crucial role in maintaining industrial harmony by providing a quasi-judicial forum for resolving conflicts related to wages, working conditions, unfair labour practices, and strikes. Its decisions are binding on both parties and can be appealed only to higher judicial bodies. In the Indian context, the CIJ is invoked in manufacturing plants, factories, and service industries where collective bargaining fails. For law aspirants preparing for competitive exams like CLAT or judiciary exams, understanding the structure and powers of the CIJ is essential because questions often appear on labour law and dispute resolution mechanisms. The CIJ ensures timely justice and prevents prolonged industrial unrest, thereby supporting economic stability.
