Chondritic Uniform Reservoir
Full Form of CHUR
What is CHUR?
Chondritic Uniform Reservoir, commonly abbreviated as CHUR, is a fundamental concept in isotope geochemistry that refers to a theoretical reservoir representing the average chemical and isotopic composition of the bulk Earth and the solar system. It is modelled after chondritic meteorites, which are primitive undifferentiated materials that have remained largely unchanged since the formation of the solar system approximately 4.56 billion years ago. CHUR serves as a critical reference point for calculating initial isotopic ratios in radiogenic isotope systems such as Samarium-Neodymium (Sm-Nd), Rubidium-Strontium (Rb-Sr), and Lead-Lead dating methods. In India, this concept is extensively studied at premier institutions like the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) in Hyderabad, the Indian Institutes of Technology, and the Geological Survey of India for research on crust-mantle evolution and Precambrian geology of the Indian Shield. It is particularly valuable for understanding the age and origin of ancient rock formations such as the Dharwar and Singhbhum Cratons. CHUR carries significant weight in competitive examinations like UPSC Geology optional, CSIR-NET Earth Sciences, GATE, and IIT-JAM.
