Congestive Heart Failure
Full Form of CHF
What is CHF?
Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) is a chronic progressive condition where the heart muscle cannot pump enough blood to meet the body's needs for oxygen and nutrients. In India, CHF is a growing public health concern due to rising rates of hypertension, diabetes, and coronary artery disease, which are major risk factors. The condition is often characterized by fluid buildup in the lungs, legs, and abdomen, leading to symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling. CHF is diagnosed through clinical evaluation, echocardiography, and blood tests like BNP levels. Management typically involves lifestyle changes, medications such as ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, and diuretics, and in advanced cases, devices like pacemakers or heart transplantation. In Indian medical education, CHF is a key topic for NEET PG, USMLE, and nursing exams, often tested on pathophysiology, staging (ACC/AHA and NYHA), and treatment protocols. Awareness and early detection are critical, especially in rural areas where access to specialized cardiac care is limited. The term is used daily in cardiology departments, general medicine wards, and public health campaigns aimed at reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases.
