Customs House Agent
Full Form of CHA
What is CHA?
A Customs House Agent (CHA) is a licensed professional authorized under the Customs Act, 1962, to represent importers and exporters in dealings with Indian Customs (Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs). CHAs manage end-to-end clearance of goods across ports, airports, ICDs, and land customs stations. Their responsibilities include filing bills of entry and shipping bills, calculating and paying duties, arranging inspections, and ensuring compliance with trade regulations and prohibitions. The role is governed by the Customs Brokers Licensing Regulations, 2018, and requires passing a national examination. CHAs are indispensable to India's logistics and supply chain ecosystem, handling documentation for billions of dollars of trade annually. They work closely with freight forwarders, shipping lines, and container terminals. With the introduction of the ICEGATE e-commerce portal and faceless assessment, CHAs have adapted to digital processes while still providing critical advisory on tariff classification, duty exemptions, and export incentives. In competitive exams like SSC CGL or UPSC Prelims, questions about CHA duties and licensing appear under Indian Economy and Commerce. For students aspiring to careers in logistics, customs brokerage, or international trade, understanding the CHA role is foundational. The demand for CHAs remains steady with India's growing trade volumes.
