Cumulative Grade Point
Full Form of CGP
What is CGP?
Cumulative Grade Point (CGP) is a key metric used in the Indian grading system, particularly under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) adopted by many universities like the University of Delhi, Anna University, and Visvesvaraya Technological University. It represents the total grade points earned by a student across all semesters or courses, without dividing by the total credits. Unlike CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average), which is the average, CGP is the raw sum of grade points multiplied by respective credit weights. This measure helps institutions assess overall academic performance, especially during final result compilation or when calculating honours and distinctions. Students often hear about CGP when checking their semester-wise grade cards or during transcript evaluations. In competitive exams like GATE or CAT, understanding CGP is less direct; however, employers and higher education institutions abroad may request transcripts showing CGP or CGPA. The concept is widely used by Indian universities to standardize grading across diverse subjects. Proper calculation of CGP ensures fair evaluation and transparency in academic records, making it essential for students transitioning from school to college or applying for further studies. It is a fundamental part of India's formal education assessment framework.
