Cargo Free Zone
Full Form of CFZ
What is CFZ?
A Cargo Free Zone (CFZ) is a designated area within a port, airport, or inland container depot where goods can be stored, handled, and processed without the immediate payment of customs duties or taxes. In India, CFZs are critical components of the logistics and trade infrastructure, enabling faster cargo movement and reducing transaction costs for exporters and importers. They are typically located near major seaports such as Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai, Mundra in Gujarat, and Chennai Port, as well as at international airports like Delhi and Bengaluru. Within a CFZ, cargo can be consolidated, deconsolidated, repackaged, or temporarily stored while awaiting re-export or clearance through customs. This facility supports India’s growing role in global supply chains, particularly under the ‘Make in India’ initiative and the National Logistics Policy. CFZs differ from Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and Free Trade Warehousing Zones (FTWZs) in that they focus specifically on cargo handling without manufacturing or value-addition requirements. For students of logistics, supply chain management, and international trade, understanding CFZs is important for exams like the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and UGC NET in commerce.
