Full Form of CDO
What is CDO?
Chief Development Officer (CDO) is a senior administrative post in the Indian district bureaucracy, typically held by an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the state cadre. The CDO heads the development wing of the district and works under the overall supervision of the District Magistrate (DM). This role is primarily responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring all rural development and poverty alleviation schemes such as MGNREGA, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, and National Rural Livelihood Mission. The CDO coordinates with line departments like agriculture, health, education, and public works to ensure timely delivery of government programs. The position is crucial for decentralized planning and drives the District Planning Committee's agenda. In states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, the CDO is a key functionary often appearing in government orders, district-level meetings, and official correspondence. For UPSC and state PCS aspirants, understanding the CDO’s role is important for interview and governance-related questions. The CDO symbolizes the convergence of development administration in rural India, ensuring that central and state schemes reach the grassroots effectively.
