Ceftazidime
Full Form of CAZ
What is CAZ?
Ceftazidime (CAZ) is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic widely used in India for the treatment of serious bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell death. In Indian hospitals, CAZ is administered intravenously or intramuscularly for conditions such as hospital-acquired pneumonia, urinary tract infections, septicemia, and infections in immunocompromised patients. It is also used off-label for complicated skin and soft tissue infections. The drug is often prescribed in intensive care units and for patients with febrile neutropenia. CAZ is included in the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines and is commonly tested in Indian medical and pharmacy entrance exams like NEET-PG and GPAT. Due to rising antimicrobial resistance, CAZ is sometimes combined with avibactam (a beta-lactamase inhibitor) to extend its efficacy. Its use requires careful monitoring of renal function and potential side effects such as hypersensitivity reactions, gastrointestinal disturbances, and neurotoxicity. Overall, CAZ remains a critical antibiotic for managing Gram-negative infections in tertiary care settings across India.
