Belt and Road Initiative
Full Form of BRI
What is BRI?
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a global infrastructure development strategy adopted by the Chinese government in 2013 to enhance regional connectivity and foster economic cooperation across Asia, Europe, and Africa. It comprises the overland Silk Road Economic Belt and the maritime 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. For India, the BRI is a significant geopolitical concern, particularly due to the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, violating India's territorial integrity. India has not endorsed the BRI and has raised objections on sovereignty grounds. The initiative is frequently discussed in Indian policy circles, academic debates, and international relations forums. Exams like UPSC Civil Services, State PCS, and UGC-NET often include questions on BRI, its impact on India, and India's counter-strategies such as the Asia-Africa Growth Corridor. The BRI has also influenced India's infrastructure push in the Northeast and its connectivity projects with Southeast Asia and Central Asia. Understanding BRI is crucial for evaluating India's foreign policy stance and its role in regional multilateral forums like SCO and BIMSTEC.
