Blood Pressure Variability
Full Form of BPV
What is BPV?
Blood Pressure Variability (BPV) refers to the fluctuations in blood pressure over time, ranging from short-term beat-to-beat changes to long-term variations across days or weeks. In India, BPV is increasingly recognized as a critical marker for cardiovascular risk, independent of average blood pressure levels. It is used in clinical settings, particularly in the management of hypertension, stroke risk assessment, and research on vascular health. Medical professionals and students in India encounter BPV during MBBS, postgraduate cardiology, and nursing curricula, especially in the context of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). Despite its growing importance, BPV is often underappreciated compared to mean blood pressure, but recent Indian studies highlight its role in predicting target organ damage, such as left ventricular hypertrophy and renal impairment. The concept is also relevant for public health programs targeting hypertension control, as variability can be influenced by medication adherence, lifestyle factors, and comorbidities. Understanding BPV helps Indian clinicians tailor antihypertensive therapy more effectively, reducing the burden of cardiovascular diseases which are a leading cause of mortality in the country.
