Basic Nursing Training
Full Form of BNT
What is BNT?
Basic Nursing Training (BNT) is a foundational vocational course that prepares individuals for entry-level roles in nursing and patient care. In India, BNT programs are typically offered by government-run health institutes, vocational training centers, and some private hospitals. The curriculum covers essential topics such as anatomy, hygiene, first aid, infection control, vital sign measurement, and basic bedside care. The course is designed to address the critical shortage of skilled paramedical staff in rural and underserved areas, enabling graduates to support registered nurses and doctors. BNT is often a prerequisite for higher nursing qualifications like General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) or B.Sc. Nursing. The training period usually spans six months to one year, and includes supervised clinical practice in community health centres or district hospitals. State nursing councils and the Indian Nursing Council recognise BNT for positions such as nursing assistant, community health worker, or home-care attendant. In competitive exams for government health departments or railway hospitals, knowledge of BNT fundamentals is frequently tested. The programme plays a vital role in India’s public health infrastructure by bridging the gap between demand and supply of basic nursing personnel, especially in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
