Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
Full Form of BNS
What is BNS?
The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) is the primary criminal code of India, enacted in 2023 to replace the colonial-era Indian Penal Code (IPC) of 1860. It came into effect on July 1, 2024, as part of a major overhaul of India's criminal justice system. The BNS consolidates and modernises criminal law, introducing new offences such as organised crime, terrorism, and mob lynching, while also incorporating community service as a punishment for minor crimes. It reduces the total number of sections from 511 to 358, simplifying legal language and removing obsolete provisions. The code is used by law enforcement agencies, courts, and legal professionals across India for prosecuting and adjudicating criminal cases. For students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, State PCS, and judiciary exams, understanding the BNS is crucial as questions frequently cover its key changes, schedules, and impact on the justice system. The BNS reflects India's move towards a more contemporary and citizen-centric legal framework.
