What is BJY?
Bharat Jodo Yatra (BJY) is a mass political march initiated by Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, aimed at uniting the country in the face of rising divisions. The journey began on September 7, 2022, from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, the southern tip of India, and concluded on January 30, 2023, in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Covering over 4,000 kilometers across 12 states and two union territories, the march was a foot campaign that saw Rahul Gandhi walking daily for 150 days, interacting with people from all walks of life. The BJY addressed issues such as unemployment, inflation, hate speech, and the need for social harmony. The movement gained widespread public attention and media coverage, becoming a defining moment in Indian politics. For students appearing in civics or political science exams, the BJY is relevant as a contemporary example of non-violent political mobilization and grassroots democracy. The acronym is commonly used in news reports and political commentary to refer to this specific campaign.
