Basic Health Worker
Full Form of BHW
What is BHW?
A Basic Health Worker (BHW) is a frontline healthcare professional in India's public health system, primarily serving in rural and underserved areas. BHWs are responsible for delivering essential primary healthcare services, including conducting health surveys, organizing immunization camps, providing maternal and child health care, and promoting health education within communities. They operate under the supervision of Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and play a crucial role in disease surveillance, especially for vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue. BHWs are often the first point of contact for villagers seeking medical advice and help bridge the gap between government health programs and remote populations. The position is commonly seen in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan, where the government recruits them through state health departments. In competitive exams such as those for Community Health Officer (CHO) or staff nurse posts, knowledge of BHW roles and the National Health Mission (NHM) is frequently tested. Their work supports India's goal of universal health coverage, making them indispensable in public health infrastructure.
