What is BDH?

Bharat Digital Health (BDH) is a government initiative under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) aimed at digitising and integrating India’s healthcare ecosystem. It provides a unique digital health ID for every citizen, enabling secure access to personal health records across hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic centres. BDH facilitates interoperability between healthcare providers, allowing seamless sharing of prescriptions, lab reports, and treatment histories with patient consent. The initiative is part of India’s broader push toward universal health coverage and data-driven public health management. BDH is used across state and central health agencies, private hospitals, and telemedicine platforms. It is particularly relevant for students preparing for UPSC, state civil services, and healthcare management exams, as it represents a key pillar of India’s digital governance. By standardising health data, BDH aims to reduce duplication of tests, improve clinical decisions, and enable better epidemic tracking. The programme was launched in phases starting 2021 and is now operational in most states.
