What is BCC?

Blind Carbon Copy (BCC) is an email feature that allows the sender to send a copy of an email to multiple recipients without revealing their email addresses to other recipients. In India, BCC is widely used in professional and personal communication, especially in corporate emails, government notifications, and academic correspondence to protect privacy and avoid reply-all chains. When composing an email in Gmail, Outlook, or other Indian-common platforms, users can add recipients to the BCC field to ensure that each recipient's address remains hidden from others. This is crucial for mass mailings, such as sending circulars to students or employees, where transparency of recipient lists is not required. BCC is also commonly tested in government job exams like IBPS, SBI PO, and UPSC computer awareness sections, where questions often focus on email etiquette and security features. The term originates from the era of physical carbon copies, where a 'blind' copy was made without the primary recipient knowing. Today, BCC remains a simple yet powerful tool for maintaining confidentiality in digital communication.
