Bharat Biotech Vaccine
Full Form of BBV
What is BBV?
BBV stands for Bharat Biotech Vaccine, specifically referring to BBV152, the brand name Covaxin. It is an inactivated whole-virion vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech International Limited in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV). BBV was one of the two primary vaccines deployed in India's massive COVID-19 vaccination drive starting January 2021. The vaccine is produced using a traditional killed-virus platform, making it stable and safe for use across diverse populations. BBV played a crucial role in India's fight against the pandemic, with over 300 million doses administered domestically and exported to many countries. It is commonly referred to as BBV in government documents, scientific literature, and vaccination certificates. For students preparing for competitive exams like NEET, UPSC, or State PG medical entrance, understanding BBV's development process, efficacy trials, and its place in India's public health strategy is important. The vaccine demonstrated strong immunogenicity and was approved for emergency use by the WHO in November 2021, further cementing its global relevance.
