Average Weekly Wages
Full Form of AVW
What is AVW?
Average Weekly Wages (AVW) is a statistical measure used to estimate the typical earnings of workers over a standard seven-day period. In India, the Ministry of Labour and Employment publishes AVW data through periodic surveys such as the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) and the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS). It is calculated by dividing the total wages paid in a week by the number of employees, excluding irregular bonuses or overtime. AVW is widely used by policymakers, economists, and researchers to assess wage trends, inflation impact on purchasing power, and regional disparities in compensation. State governments and private organisations also reference AVW for minimum wage revisions and collective bargaining. For students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC or UGC NET, AVW is a component of labour economics and social welfare indicators. Understanding AVW helps in analysing the effectiveness of wage policies in India’s formal and informal sectors.
