Aerodrome Traffic Zone
Full Form of ATZ
What is ATZ?
An Aerodrome Traffic Zone (ATZ) is a designated airspace around an aerodrome used to ensure the safe and orderly flow of aircraft during takeoff, landing, and ground movements. In India, ATZs are established at most civil and military airfields under the regulatory framework of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The zone typically extends horizontally to a radius of 5 nautical miles from the aerodrome reference point and vertically up to a specified altitude. Within the ATZ, aircraft must maintain communication with the local air traffic control (ATC) and follow strict procedures to avoid collisions. Pilots operating at Indian airports—whether for scheduled airlines, general aviation, or training flights—must be thoroughly familiar with ATZ boundaries and reporting points. The concept is taught extensively in DGCA exam syllabi for Commercial Pilot License (CPL) and Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL), as well as in ATC training programs. Understanding the ATZ is crucial for safe flight operations in Indian airspace, especially near busy metropolitan airports like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
