Advanced Rocket Weapon
Full Form of ARW
What is ARW?
Advanced Rocket Weapon (ARW) refers to a class of modern, high-precision rocket systems designed for long-range strikes against fortified positions, armored vehicles, and enemy infrastructure. In the Indian defence context, ARWs are being developed and inducted by the Indian Army and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to supplement artillery and missile systems. These weapons offer improved accuracy, range, and lethality compared to traditional unguided rockets. The Indian Army’s focus on ARWs is part of its modernization drive, especially along the northern and western borders. ARW systems are used in both offensive and defensive operations, providing saturation fire and counter-battery capabilities. They are deployed by artillery regiments and specialized rocket units. ARWs can be mounted on wheeled or tracked platforms for mobility. For defence aspirants, understanding ARWs is important for examinations such as the UPSC Combined Defence Services (CDS), National Defence Academy (NDA), and technical entry schemes. The DRDO's Pinaka and Smerch systems are examples of ARW-like platforms. As India continues to develop indigenous rocket technologies, ARWs will play a key role in future battlefield strategies.
